Heat

• Hyperthermia (Heatstroke):
  • When the body’s core temperature rises above 104°F (40°C), heatstroke can occur, leading to potentially fatal organ failure.
  • Environmental temperatures exceeding 95°F (35°C) with high humidity (when the heat index is above 105°F/40°C) can be deadly, especially if there’s no shade, ventilation, or hydration.
  • In “wet bulb temperatures” of around 95°F (35°C) (a measure combining heat and humidity), even healthy individuals can only survive for a few hours.

Cold

• Hypothermia:
  • Hypothermia begins when the body’s core temperature drops below 95°F (35°C).
  • Environmental temperatures below 50°F (10°C) with wet conditions (e.g., rain or immersion in water) can cause hypothermia.
  • Prolonged exposure to freezing temperatures (32°F or 0°C) or lower can be fatal without adequate clothing or shelter.
  • Extremely cold temperatures (below -40°F/-40°C) can cause frostbite or death within minutes without proper protection.

Factors That Increase Risk

2. Humidity: High humidity amplifies heat risks, while wind increases the effects of cold.
3. Clothing and Shelter: Lack of protection accelerates heat loss or gain.
4. Hydration and Nutrition: Dehydration or malnutrition worsens tolerance to extreme temperatures.
5. Health Conditions: The elderly, young children, and those with chronic illnesses are more vulnerable.
