What is Autism Spectrum Disorder?

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental disorder that affects communication, behavior, and social interaction. It encompasses a wide range of symptoms and levels of impairment. Recognizing the core signs of autism in children is essential for early diagnosis and intervention.

Core Signs of Autism

1. Social Communication and Interaction Challenges

  • Difficulty with Social Interaction:
    • Limited or no eye contact.
    • Difficulty understanding or responding to social cues, such as facial expressions, gestures, or tone of voice.
    • Trouble forming or maintaining peer relationships.
  • Challenges with Communication:
    • Delayed speech or language development (e.g., not speaking single words by 16 months or phrases by 24 months).
    • Difficulty initiating or sustaining conversations.
    • Repetition of words or phrases (echolalia) without understanding their context.
    • Limited use of gestures (e.g., pointing or waving) to communicate needs or emotions.
  • Lack of Shared Interest:
    • Difficulty engaging in joint attention, such as pointing to share an interest in an object or event.
    • May not show interest in what others are doing or engage in pretend play.

2. Restricted, Repetitive Behaviors or Interests

  • Repetitive Movements or Speech:
    • Hand flapping, rocking, spinning, or other repetitive body movements.
    • Repeating the same phrase, question, or sound.
  • Highly Focused Interests:
    • Intense preoccupation with specific topics, objects, or activities (e.g., an obsession with numbers, trains, or dinosaurs).
  • Need for Routine and Predictability:
    • Strong resistance to changes in routine or environment.
    • Distress when routines are disrupted.
  • Sensory Sensitivities:
    • Over- or under-responsiveness to sensory input, such as sounds, textures, lights, smells, or pain.
    • May cover ears, avoid certain foods or fabrics, or seek sensory stimulation (e.g., spinning objects).

Additional Signs (Not Core but Common)

  • Difficulty regulating emotions, leading to meltdowns or outbursts.
  • Advanced skills in specific areas (e.g., math, memory, music) alongside challenges in other domains.
  • Lack of fear or an unusual response to danger.

Developmental Red Flags

Parents and caregivers should consider seeking professional evaluation if they notice any of the following:

  • Lack of babbling, pointing, or other gestures by 12 months.
  • No single words by 16 months.
  • No two-word phrases by 24 months.
  • Regression in language, social skills, or play at any age.

Next Steps

If signs of autism are observed, early evaluation and intervention are critical. Reach out to a pediatrician or developmental specialist for:

  1. Developmental Screening: A questionnaire or observation of milestones.
  2. Comprehensive Evaluation: A detailed assessment by a specialist (e.g., child psychologist, neurologist, or speech therapist).

Early diagnosis and intervention can significantly improve outcomes for children with ASD.
